Everyone goes to Amsterdam. It's the obvious choice. But smart groups are discovering Utrecht — and they're not looking back.
Here's why Utrecht might be the better choice for your next stag do, hen party, birthday or team day.
Utrecht has its own canal system — and it's arguably more beautiful than Amsterdam's. The Oudegracht is unique: it has medieval wharf cellars built into the canal walls, now home to restaurants, bars and terraces right at water level. You won't find that anywhere else in the Netherlands.
The big difference? No crowds. While Amsterdam's canals are packed with tour boats and selfie sticks, Utrecht's waterways are peaceful, scenic and genuinely enjoyable.
Utrecht is just 30 minutes from Amsterdam by direct train. Flying into Schiphol? You can be in Utrecht's city centre in under an hour. It's so close that some groups do one day in Utrecht, one in Amsterdam — the best of both worlds.
Everything is cheaper in Utrecht than Amsterdam. Hotels, restaurants, drinks, activities. A typical night out costs 20–30% less. Your stag do budget stretches further — or you can do more with the same money.
Utrecht has a thriving nightlife scene, especially around Neude Square and the Oudegracht. There are over 300 bars and restaurants in the city centre. Popular spots include TivoliVredenburg (live music venue), Kafé België (Belgian beer bar with 200+ beers) and the countless waterside terraces.
The Utrecht beer bike route takes you along the Oudegracht, past the Dom Tower (tallest church tower in the Netherlands at 112m), through medieval streets and past the city's best landmarks. At 90 minutes with 20L beer on tap from €25 per person, it's the same great experience as Amsterdam — in a more authentic setting.
Amsterdam is wonderful, but it can feel touristy. Utrecht is a real Dutch city where locals outnumber visitors. You'll hear more Dutch, find more local restaurants, and get a more genuine taste of the Netherlands.
